What is the difference in emphasis between the terms science fiction and speculative fiction?
Which is The Man in the High Castle?
Science fiction is created story from the imagination of the people which does not exist. Based on scientific fact, refers to the type of narrative holds that the realization of the non-fictional world of the novel features. That combines the vision of scientific facts about human civilization and it is the main content. In the customary literary tradition, SF (in recent years, the word has been used more the SF abbreviation) has been implied criticism and had agreement to exclude from the category of literature. In other words, when viewed from a traditional perspective literature should reflect the reality of science fiction, 'fictional world' unbelievable or absurd world 'normally is considered. But the indisputable fact that modern prose in the scientific literature that imaginative intervention. These elements of the novel had expanded the fun that can not be denied.
Speculative fiction can be made story-line by “what if?” background. (Brown, 2001)
However, the term speculative fiction has broader and unlimited narrative section which includes fantasy, horror, mystery, myth, fairy tale, supernatural, superhero, utopian and dystopian, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic and alternate history as well as science fiction. It does not have a boundary. The whole lot of things can be possible in speculative fiction such as twisting time, and thinking. It is beyond the reality and imaginary that may overlap one or more genre from the above.
The difference between in science fiction and speculative fiction is more focus on future science and technology in science fiction but speculative fiction is representing characteristic of humanity, relation and socialism of new world.
Finally in my opinion, ‘The Man in the High Castle’ can be identifying in both science fiction and speculative fiction. Although science fiction is only a small part but it interconnects and deals with humanity and socialism also background of it has speculative fiction thought of “what if” result of WWII was diverse from the current.

Some language issues here, Hye-young. For example: 'Based on scientific fact, refers to the type of narrative holds that the realization of the non-fictional world of the novel features' This sentence has no meaning in English. Very garbled. Some ideas come across.

DeleteI think 'The Man in the High Castle' is more likely be Speculative Fiction which is based on 'what if' Germany and Japan won World War 2. However, it has included scientific features of another new future world.
DeleteBefore reading your posting, I did not understand between science fiction and speculative fiction. But, I can understand them because your posting is very clear. I also think 'The Man in the High Castle' is closer to Speculative Fiction although the fiction has scientific contents related with new world. However, I think the fiction deals with the story that did not happen in reality.
